Registering with a local doctor

Easy ReadOne or more sections on this page provide access to easy-read information - look out for this logo.

If you move to a new area it is always advisable to register with a local general practitioner (GP) practice as soon as you arrive, particularly if you already have health problems which are likely to need medical treatment at any time.

And being registered with a GP right now means that,  even if you are currently in good health, you will experience less delays in getting treatment if you do become unwell.

Normally you will need to make an appointment with a GP surgery and have a medical before you register with them.

If you don't know where your local GPs are based then the NHS website allows you to search for GP surgeries in your area. You can then check what services they offer, and how other patients have rated them.

If you have ever experienced the frustration of having to wait on the phone to book an appointment with your GP then you may be interested to know that many surgeries now allow you to book your appointments online via the NHS website or the NHS App.

You may also be able to order repeat prescriptions online, view your medical records, or get the results of medical tests.

You can find out more on the NHS website.

The NHS App

The NHS app is an app which you can download onto your smartphone. With the NHS app, registered patients can:

  • order repeat prescriptions and nominate a pharmacy where you would like to collect them
  • book and manage appointments
  • view your GP health record to see information like your allergies and medicines (if your GP has given you access to your detailed medical record, you can also see information like test results)
  • book and manage COVID-19 vaccinations
  • register your organ donation decision
  • choose how the NHS uses your data
  • view your NHS number (find out what your NHS number is)
  • use NHS 111 online to answer questions and get instant advice or medical help near you

You can go to your App store and download them from here:
