Saving money on your water bills
Saving water in the home is not only better for the environment, it can also save you money on your bills. If you're on a water meter, you will be billed according to the amount of water you use - so the less you use, the less you will have to pay.
What you can do
Here are some simple ideas for ways to save water in your home and garden:
- Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth - leaving the tap running can waste up to 6 litres of water every minute
- Consider a low-flush toilet which uses less water with each flush, or add a 'hippo' or 'save-a-flush' block to your cistern to cut down on the amount of water used
- Wait until your washing machine or dishwasher is full before turning it on
- When boiling the kettle or water for cooking, use only as much water as you need - it'll save on your energy bills too!
- Use rainwater butts to collect water for gardening
- Get any leaks or dripping taps fixed
- Keep a jug of water in the fridge so you will always have cold water to hand without having to run the taps to get the water to run through cold
