"A purpose in life gives you a better sleep", a study has found.

Having a good reason to get out of bed in the morning is likely to give you a better night's sleep in it at the end of the day because you feel more at ease and happier with your life, US research suggests.

Older Individuals suffer more sleep disturbances and insomnia but according to the observations made, people who had a purpose in life had better sleep quality and also had

  • 63 per cent less chances of falling prey to  sleep apnea, a sleep disorder characterized by pauses in breathing or periods of shallow breathing during sleep.
  • and 52 per cent less chances of having restless leg syndrome, also known as Willis-Ekbom disease, is a common condition of the nervous system that causes an overwhelming, irresistible urge to move the legs.

"Helping people cultivate a purpose in life could be an effective drug-free strategy to improve sleep quality, particularly for a population that is facing more insomnia," said Dr Jason Ong, Associate Professor at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

"Purpose in life is something that can be cultivated and enhanced through mindfulness therapies," Ong added.

The 823 participants study participants, of individuals aged between 60-100 years with average age 79, answered a 10-question survey on purpose in life and a 32-question survey on sleep.

Although the researchers looked at older adults, who generally sleep less than younger individuals, they believe the findings are likely to apply to the broader public.
