Listening Books FREE membership opportunity

Listening Books FREE membership opportunity

Listening Books provide an audiobook library service for anyone with an illness, physical or learning disability, mental health condition, or learning difficulty, who finds that it impacts on their ability to read or hold books in the usual way. They currently have a number of free memberships available for people living in Westminster who would like to join, but would find it difficult to cover their usual membership fees (between £20 to £45 per year) for any reason.

The service is not just for people with visual impairments, but many other health conditions that can make reading or holding books difficult such as: Dementia, Parkinson’s Disease, stroke, arthritis, frailty, Fibromyalgia, ME/CFS, cancer, depression, anxiety, learning disabilities, autism, dyslexia, diabetes, head/spinal injuries and many other conditions. They believe that books should be accessible to everyone and audiobooks can be a wonderful source of entertainment, comfort and relaxation for those who are missing out on the enjoyment of reading.

They don’t require any financial proof for these free memberships, just a self-declaration that the annual membership fee would be a barrier to joining the service. Please be assured that they are a charity and there are no hidden costs involved in their free memberships.

Their library has over 8,000 fiction and non-fiction titles for adults and children, including bestselling authors such as JK Rowling, Khaled Hosseini, David Walliams, Zadie Smith, Haruki Murakami, Malorie Blackman and many more. They also have set texts and study guides supporting the National Curriculum from Key Stage 2 to A Level and many of these titles are recorded in their professional digital studios and are not available anywhere else. Members can borrow their titles in three easily accessible ways:

  • sent directly through the post on MP3 CD with no postage costs or late fees.
  • download audiobooks through their website or app to smartphones, tablets, computers, laptops.
  • stream audiobooks online through your computer, laptop or tablet.

A free membership covers both their online and postal services, so members can choose what works best for them.
